Locally Quasi-Convex Compatible Topologies on a Topological Group

For a locally quasi-convex topological abelian group (G, τ), we study the poset C (G, τ) of all locally quasi-convex topologies on G that are compatible with τ (i.e., have the same dual as (G, τ)) ordered by inclusion. Obviously, this poset has always a bottom element, namely the weak topology σ(G, Ĝ). Whether it has also a top element is an open question. We study both quantitative aspects of ...

Topological diagonalizations and Hausdorff dimension

The Hausdorff dimension of a product X × Y can be strictly greater than that of Y , even when the Hausdorff dimension of X is zero. But when X is countable, the Hausdorff dimensions of Y and X × Y are the same. Diagonalizations of covers define a natural hierarchy of properties which are weaker than “being countable” and stronger than “having Hausdorff dimension zero”. Fremlin asked whether it ...

Lattice of compactifications of a topological group

We show that the lattice of compactifications of a topological group $G$ is a complete lattice which is isomorphic to the lattice of all closed normal subgroups of the Bohr compactification $bG$ of $G$. The correspondence defines a contravariant functor from the category of topological groups to the category of complete lattices. Some properties of the compactification lattice of a topological ...

On the Infimum of the Hausdorff and Vietoris Topologies

We study the infimum of the Hausdorff and Vietoris topologies on the hyperspace of a metric space. We show that this topology coincides with the supremum of the upper Hausdorff and lower Vietoris topologies if and only if the underlying metric space is either totally bounded or is a UC space.

All Finite Distributive Lattices Occur as Intervals Between Hausdorff Topologies

It is shown that a finite lattice L is isomorphic to the interval between two Hausdorff topologies on some set if and only if L is distributive. The corresponding results had previously been shown in ZFC for intervals between T1 topologies and, assuming the existence of infinitely many measurable cardinals, for intervals between T3 topologies. Mathematics Subject Classifications (1991): Primary...
